Program Info

The artist created the White Building project in 2016. He produced this series of films with performance artists who lived in a white building in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The French Rule ended in 1953 in Cambodia. 3 years later, Vann Molyvann, who studied architecture in Paris, returned to his home country and worked as the director of the Bureau of Urban Organization and Housing under the Department of Public Engineering. He designed several hallmark New Khmer Architecture projects. They chose a piece of land of 24 acres along the Bassac river for an urban planning project that includes multi-layered and low-cost housing and public buildings such as expo venues and national theatres.
In 1963, the construction of the White Building is completed and offered to the 468 residents including the city hall staff, teachers and civil servants at the lowest price. Vann Molyvann, who majored in architecture in Paris, and his team fused the French minimalist style and the concept of the Cambodian traditional stilt house and constructed 4 floor buildings along the river bank with a corridor that was 325 meters long. Anyone can enjoy a river view no matter where they stand.

In 1975, Khmer Rouge soldiers took over Phnom Penh and the citizens were forced to relocate. As a result, the new building was abandoned, together with the dream of a new era. During the Khmer Rouge, traditional performance arts were seen as a symbol of the old era. About 90% of the artists died as casualties of the war. When the Khmer Rouge fell from power in 1979, the artists who survived were invited to reside again in this building. Nowadays, after almost 50 years of civil wars, humidity, burning flames and lack of maintenance funds, the White Building has become a gray-colored broken residential area for low income people.
