AR Artworks
Artist/ Students from National Tsing Hua University majoring in Art & Technology.

We only realize in the depths of night, when our two eyes are confounded by darkness, that our minds are incarcerated prisoners. Yet, if everything as they seem ultimately fades, with no meaning to be found, how are we able to view things as they are, holistically? Only by purging the gates of our senses can we navigate the illusory world and regain our grasp on the search for the nature of things. All things are able to be seen in their infinite original state.

The nameless is the origin of heaven and earth; the named is the mother of the myriad things…. These two have the same origin, but they differ in name; both are called Mystery. One Mystery plus another Mystery, is the source of all wonders.

These words are from Laozi’s Tao Te Ching. As the source of all wonders is formed by the collection of the creaters’ AR works, the word “miao” or wonders is replaced by the word “huan” or illusory, to distinguish it from reality. While AR is like a dream or an illusion, it leads people to enter the shapeless from the shapely state of being. Users can use this work as a medium and push open their gates of the senses, and experience the myriad of illusions that leap out behind those gates.

Bai Sin-Ying《Too Much

Majoring in technology and art. Like simple and beautiful things rather than complex.Dream to become a person full of happiness.

Slime symbolizes a spiritual state or a social phenomenon. The human emotion and human thought often fill up because of complicated reasons of every kind. The work takes a physical approach to show the filling-up of human thought at work. At first, something small is created, then spreads out and gradually accumulates to the entire space. It is like the human feeling, often occupied by specific types of emotions.

International Intercollegiate MS Program – Art and Emerging Technology, NTHU

The installation uses AR to convert the windows of the Wego building into a pokable format. You get to see the interiors. The audience can use their physical force to break a specific power structure. Poking is a sort of nonsensical destruction, a humorous way of attacking. The desire to want to see something on the inside is expressed through poking.

Lu Bo-Ying《Brand New War

A nineteen-year-old teenager who searching his life goal.Oops...it's about to twenty. I want to see the world in more different way.

The brand as a concept takes shape as people busy themselves showing off fresh new products to the world. It is what people make their products recognizable and unique. Branding creates unique symbols and names. However, when uniqueness is ubiquitous commonality forms. To break out from the rest, a brand needs to fight off other brands and attract attention. Internet advertisement becomes the battlefront, while the shopping venues take up the role as the main field of battle.

Ho Mandy《Occupation: Miramar

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Life Science from NTHU, and I am currently studying in the MS program of art and emerging technology. Most of my creations are illustrations and graphic designs. After getting to know more in hybrid arts, I focus mainly on bio art and bio inspired design instead.

“Occupy: Miramar” is about the millions of connections between us and our environment. This work collects local microbes to showcase the momentary form of the present. Once microbes enter a favorable environment, it could occupy each and every corner that we can touch. They feed on the nutrition that the environment provides, which reflects the human being’s way of life. The interaction and overlapping of space and time between people created the present as we know it, just like the microbiota in our environment.

When we visit the Miramar, we occupy; we are also occupied by a part of it.

Ho Chieh-Jui《Screens

My name is HO CHIEH-JUI and I am studying at the Art Institute.

The beautiful Ferris wheel offers riders different perspectives to observe the Miramar complex and the Taipei City in general. Visitors to the installation get to see the Miramar from the standpoint of others and experience an even bigger scenic window than the Ferris wheel itself.

Yu Hsiao-Chinu《the Message from...

YU HSIAO CHIN , a nineteen-year-old born in Taichung , is currently studying in Interdisciplinary Program of Technology and Art , National Tsing Hua University.

This work is an AR camera. The user can explore the environment and elicit a range of information for interaction and conversation.

Lin Pin-Hsien《Crowded

I study in National Tsing-Hua University, majoring in interdisciplinary program of technology and art, grade 22.

Have you ever had the feeling that you have lost yourself as you struggle in a sea of people? So many people, yet you feel the rushing sense of suffocating loneliness. The overloaded city, overloaded information, and overloaded hearts, all so suffocating. You feel the urge to leave the crowded city, to a place where it only belongs to you. In this work, whenever you open the app, you will find a white figure running on the screen. When the white figure runs into another white figure, an additional white figure would appear, etc. The work captures the feeling that crowdedness is created by our own existence. Ultimately the small figures would fill the entire screen, creating the suffocating sensation that crowdedness brings.

Wu Po-Yap《Spatiotemporal

Wu PoYao, born in Taipei,Taiwan, graduated from the Department of Computer Science of National Tsing Hua University. Holding the love of art, she now study in Division of Division of Art and Emerging Technology International Intercollegiate MS Program National Tsing Hua University. In the artwork creation, she love the elements related to "time" and try keep memories in different ways, hoping using technology media to preserve the temperature of human nature.

We are accustomed to using social media or a journal to document our lives, but these memories typically exist in a two-dimensional user interface, such as books or computer websites. They cannot graft memory with space, creating a stronger correlation. This work gives users a new way to record life, and help users to move beyond the two-dimensional approaches such as written documentation and social media postings. The proposed method of recording allows viewers to narrate memory segments in space. The floating, uncoordinated memory information have their fixation points within the existing space. Each message, posting, and memory would associate with each other in the space. The hope is to give users a new medium to express themselves to the world, to record and provide feedback in response to space. Viewers can travel within this space of augmented reality and interact with their own preserved memories. Memories could then be revived because of space, and space could exist because of memories.

Lihan《Where?

A girl who join this kind of huge exhibition first time.

When I first came to Miramar and saw the many charming architectures, I turned toward my friend and said, look that that, this place is lively! My friend looked at me, confused, and said, lively? There is hardly anyone here!

Yeah… I realized this and felt strange. Miramar is like an empty city running itself, which gives me an eerie sense of strangeness. The window displays are filled with headless models, and that sense of the paranormal struck again. I then heard about how Miramar is situated on land that was reclaimed following a river straightening project. What struck me was a question: is Miramar devoid of people, but filled with the spirits of the river’s dead?

This work is titled “where.” It asks: where are the people? Where is the humanity? Where is the liveliness? Where are the fish? Where are homes of the fish? Where are you?

Chen Yan-Rong, Su Tsan-Yuan《UNDER CONSTRUCTION

We are both studying an MA in New Media Art at TNUA. Su’s artworks include video and kinetic installations, and Chen has contributed in the field of video art. We are trying to disturb the realistic world with virtual images by undertaking artistic experiments.

Restore time and space to full developing state, using the digital interface to observe urban slices in rapid development. The work uses AR (Augmented Reality) to let users see and explore the ever-expanding city through digital devices, and redefine Dazhi between the crevice of virtuality and reality.

The user can use the handheld device to observe and penetrate the scaffolding, step into a construction site, and become embraced by the familiar scaffolding and canvas. The user would slowly move the body and explore in a limited perspective, and feel how Dazhi developed, and reflect on whether the fast-paced change of a city fulfills our expectations toward the future.

Notice to visitors: dear users, we are about to penetrate the canvas and scaffolding. Please hold your devices tightly. There will be no contact. Please feel at ease to explore.

Tonight, we will pry open the concrete and the roofings and use the space as a stage for a “monster” play. Enjoy the undying night with Taiwanese demons!

The theme of this work is Taiwanese demons. We use the wall as the background of the theatrical stage, and use AR to show what demons are doing on the other side of the wall. The monstrous play conveyed through simple words and interactions, offers us a window to learning more about Taiwanese monsters.

The experiencer would see in the installation an ordinary, real Taipei night scene. Gradually, the highrises and scenery in the screen become gridded colors, fusing reality with virtuality. The real becomes engulfed. As the boundary between the real and the unreal breaks down, the entire city becomes an 8-bit image. In the process, the experiencer can move around freely, turning the smartphone and observe the change of scenery from different perspectives.

Dream is a blend of the real and the unreal. It is a floating and fleeting bubble so fragile that cannot be touched. If a dream shatters into foam, it becomes nothing. If you are buried in foam, is that a blessing, or something ominous? Are you happy because you are borne by dreams, or are you miserable, drowning in hopes?

This is your dream.

Yen Yi《Guiding Spirits

Hi,everyone. My name is Yen Yi.I am a student from Nation Tsing Hua University. It is an honor to be a part of such a big art activity.Hope everyone enjoy my work.

Spirits in the forests are protectors of nature. They wander between foliage and rest on branches, quietly and serenely observe the silvan state of things. The spirits that linger among man, wandering in the crowd, loitering in the streets and alleys, uttering no voice, shrouded in nothing: they lift their hands only when someone happens to see a glimpse of them, using that weightless finger to indicate a sliver of direction for the rare observer.
